Words + Images: Jackie Shapiro Brooker

It’s between meal times, but your food baby is HANKering to eat. Still a siesta away, dinner time is too distant for anyone’s comfort, especially those who might encounter a real Snickers moment. Before the inner beast is released, check out these flavorful and slightly filling snack hacks that will silence the growing rage in your cage.

Maria’s Kitchen at The Drop-In Store

THE DROP-IN STORE

If you’re anywhere near downtown Greenville, you’re close to Maria’s Drop-In Store at the entrance of the North Main Neighborhood on Stone Avenue. The butter chicken tandori wrap is a winner. And to be honest, they’re all winners.

IYKYK. Here’s a link.

IRIE CARIBBEAN CUISINE

Nothing says flava more than sinking your teeth into a Jamacian pattie. This flaky crust semicircle filled with seasoned meats or vegetables will satisfy the pickiest taste buds. While you’re at it, order their warm coconut bread to make it into a seriously tasty sammie. Grab some of their tropical lemonade or a Ting from the fridge.

ASIA PACIFIC SUPERMARKET

ASIA PACIFIC SUPERMARKET

Prewrapped and ready to go, look for these little treats on Fridays when they come in fresh from Atlanta. You can choose from a variety of options ranging from sweet to savory—all in the cases by the registers.

BAKE ROOM

Can we talk about this ET (everything) bagel croissant? We don’t mean to gossip, but this is one tasty love child born from a Flaky French Pastry and a Greenfield’s ET Bagel with scallion cream cheese. Conveniently located at the Commons next to Unity Park.

Automatic Taco

AUTOMATIC TACO

Another satisfying highlight from The Commons is the Indian Butter Chicken taco featuring Masala Matters spice mix and topped with jalapeño, crema, pickled onion, and a touch of cilantro. Your life is now complete.

SACHA’S CAFE

And let us not forget the Colombian-style empanada. She’s a savory yellow corn dough turnover stuffed with seasoned chicken or beef mixed with cooked potatoes.

Instructions:
1. Bite the top off vertically
2. Fill hole with liquid salsa goodness
3. EAT
4. Mouthgasm
5. Feel the love
6. Repeat

Kuka Juice

Kuka Juice

Craving a little sweetness that will light up your day? Take a detour to Kuka Juice.

Drink a colorful smoothie. Or treat yourself to one of their toasts.

We’re especially fond of the Bee Sweet Toast on Great Harvest Bread topped with almond butter, banana, chia seeds, bee pollen, and honey.

Califas

These Birria Pupusa Bombs from Califas rank up there with the most bang for your snacking buck. An order of two fried masa balls, STUFFED with dripping birria beef and cheese, with a side of encurtido (pickled jalapenos and such) and salsa roja is enough to satiate even the hangriest among us and hit every corner of your tastebuds.
